Drawings and Documents

The Cumbrian Railways Association holds a large collection of historical documents, mainly relating to railway operational matters. The documents have a wide geographical spread across the whole county and cover a wide time-span from original Acts of Parliament to recent times. There is a good collection of working timetables and their appendices, trip working and special traffic notices, as well as some which defy categorisation. These documents will be of interest to the researcher, the modeller, or anyone interested in the railways of Cumbria. The current extend of our collection is:

  • 8,300 Pre Group files (all companies)
  • 11,500 Post Group files (from the inception of the LMS to Network Rail)
  • Nearly 100 Acts of Parliament
  • 5,000 Ordnance Survey maps

Each file is a document, varying from 1 to 500 pages.

Digital copies are provided free of charge, but this is a service only available to members. If you are not a member already you are welcome to join us.

The following two listings only cover part of our collection which is growing by the week so please contact our Archivist with your requirements using the form below.

Plans are supplied as jpeg or pdf files emailed to your personal address. Some mages have been scanned from microfilms and are in monochrome only. The originals of many plans have been stored in rolls and a strip at one end may be very dirty and unreadable. Plans can only be supplied unseen at the purchaser’s risk but please contact our Archivist with queries using the form below.
Note that some plans have been filmed and scanned in two or more sections and each section counts as one image. These are identified in the plans list with suffixes A, B, C, etc.
